Hi Steve and Kathy :) If you upgrade from Windows 8.1, you will not loose your personal files, nor will you loose your installed programs (unless some of them aren't compatible with Windows 10) and your Windows settings. They'll follow you throught the new installation of Windows 10. It's exactly like when you upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1.
Click on the Start button. Click on Control Panel on the right-hand side. You should see a window like the one below. Click System and Security. Then click Windows Update. The window below should appear. Click Check for Updates on the left-hand sidebar to search for new updates. Remember: NO Security Updates. Your device might malfunction due to these compatibility or other issues.
